Not enough help after major quake

If an M7.0 to M7.2 earthquake does hit Metro Manila soon, there will most probably be insufficient rescue and emergency personnel to serve the injured spread in different locations...help can be very much delayed. Every community may need to have their own medical supplies and group of volunteers who are trained for such a disaster...because we may surely be the one doing the rescue operation and first aid treatment ourselves.
Here are some more suggestions for those who want to be prepared.
  1. Make your houses and offices safe. Involve yourself in the earthquake preparedness activities of your child's school. Look around you for possible hazards like glass and fluorescent lights that could break and fall, objects that could drop and furniture, like cabinets, that could come crashing down.
  2. Identify safe spots where you could immediately duck during the tremors. Look for sturdy furniture like tables that can shield you from falling glass and other objects. Consider that you may have to move holding on and crawling with that furniture over your head to avoid collapsing walls.
  3. Schedule some time to learn First Aid as you and your companions may definitely have to administer it to yourselves and each other during an emergency. Anyway, you will still find it useful in your daily life even if the emergency or earthquake doesn't come.
  4. Consider donating blood now and try doing it as often as your health would permit. Blood shortage is a perennial problem of blood banks because many people don't volunteer unless they need blood for their patients. During disasters, blood shortage may go from bad to worse. More survivors perish because of insufficient supplies of blood aside from medicine. Enlisting as an organ donor will also save many lives.
  5. Pray to God, who is far more powerful than any disaster. All throughout our human history, from the ancient times to the present, when people are confronted with danger or catastrophe, they pray and God saves them. We live in a world where there is a constant threat to our safety and our lives. Earthquakes from faults, volcanic eruptions, landslides, stampede, riots, terrorist attacks..flash floods are everywhere even in powerful and developed countries. The only difference we may have from some people is that we have faith on a God that will save us...a God who will be with us through everything that happens to our lives.
God bless you all.
